Keane with Dominic Scott – Original Keane Concerts Now in Digital Format!
This is collection of 3 concerts represents the early incarnation of a band called “Keane” as they played their first Internet broadcasts for MusicTV.com. These concerts were broadcast live on the day of the events all over the world on one of the first video websites OnlineTV.com. They were viewed millions of times and their fame made quantum leaps as fans in the USA and all over the UK were introduced through the broadcasts and streaming archives of OnlineTV.com.
The September 2001 concert is the first known recording of the song “Wolf At The Door.”
Keane now in Digital Format
After over a decade from the release of these Keane early concerts on DVD, Rick’s Music Archives has now been allowed to offer digital download of one, two, or all three incredible concerts. Each concert was re-encoded with the best software, digitally enhanced, sound sculpted and now available for all serious Keane fans.
Early Keane History
These concerts were available on the Music TV website for years but in a much lower quality due to the poor compression tools and the slow speed of Internet connections. The concerts were viewed millions of times throughout the years. Still these archives and the live broadcasts at Bull and Gate helped launch the band that would eventually be the Keane you all know today. You will see and hear the difference Dominic Scott made. In fact most of the songs on Keane’s first and second CD were created with Dominic and developed during this configuration of Keane. The group on this video is not the Keane you know and you will take a trip back in history as the band morphed from “The Lotus Eaters,” with this being the interim before the Keane of today, which is still changing. This is Dominic Scott’s Keane band, a guitar band. We cannot stress enough this is not what the band Keane is doing today.
About Keane and OnlineTV.com Broadcasts
Live broadcast was a rare thing on the Internet in 1999 and only a few companies were doing this. To give you an idea how advanced a concept this was – Youtube came online in 2005, 6 years later. Online TV was the first American website to bring the broadcast of new and upcoming music to the USA and broaden the appeal and audience of UK groups. Working a contract out with the Bull and Gate OnlineTV started to broadcast any group who signed the release in exchange for the broadcast cost and archives. I sort of worked for the future with the hopes some of the bands would get big. I would then have these little treasures to make back the investment in their futures. The sites and clubs would give the bands broader opportunities and popularity. It worked for a lot of bands. These Bull and Gate concerts were the only ones that gave rise to this bands gratitude in coming back to play the little dive when they were on top. Giving the venue a boost. These Bull and Gate concerts launched a new entity. There is nothing else like it in the world.

For Keane fans these are truly priceless concerts. Highly recommended and a million thanks to Rick for making them available (especially in digital format).
As he says in his description, this isn’t the Keane you’re used to hearing. Here they were a rock band – in these concerts, you don’t just get to hear what they’re like with Dominic Scott’s unique style of guitar, but also with Tom Chaplin singing in a much rougher style than he developed later. They’re so different that it’s almost jarring to see Tim Rice-Oxley playing the keyboard after hearing him on bass for most songs.
The first recording from 1999 is the longest and most fleshed out, especially with the gorgeous and unearthly song “More Matey” ending the set. The second from 2000 has the clearest audio in all respects and the camera is moved around more often to spotlight the other band members, but sadly, the setlist only consists of six songs; that said, this recording has what I consider the best version of Rubbernecking with a really breathtaking guitar solo in the final moments. In the 2001 recording Chaplin unfortunately isn’t quite in the same fine voice as before, but it’s still worth your time nonetheless. Hearing Keane classics like Bedshaped and She Has No Time with guitar is really something.
I am a lover of ephemera in all its forms, and I consider these concerts to be some of the most wonderful ephemera of all. The world of Keane would be a bit dimmer without them. There are songs included here like “Pot of Gold” and “Morsel” that aren’t available in any other form to my knowledge. Perhaps my favorite moment comes in the 2000 concert, and I highly recommend you keep an ear out for it: the Force Theme from Star Wars is briefly played on guitar in the background of one song. It’s a wonderful addition that only goes to show how much talent and verve existed in Keane right from the start.
