The Wee Turtles At Acme Underground, NYC For CMJ 2000

The Wee Turtles blessed our stage at Acme Underground for the NYC CMJ Music Festival in the year 2000. Our third year taping and broadcasting the CMJ festival at various venues. The Wee Turtles brought their own Southern brand of Alt-Rock to our stages and staggered the crowd with a tight band with a powerful performance.  The quartet jammed throughout the set and the smooth vocals of Jon Croxton certainly carried through all their wild songs. They came along with their mates from Je Suis France as part of the contingent from Dave Lowery’s publishing company representing the Athens, Georgia music scene. Dave Lowery and Johnny Hickman played the night after them for their CMJ Performance on the same Acme Underground stages.

Who Are The Wee Turtles

From Athens, GA an indie pop quartet the Wee Turtles formed in the summer of 1998 by singer/guitarist Jon Croxton, guitarist Brian Crews, bassist Robbie Beers, and drummer Phil Horan. Jon Croxton is also part of Je Suis France which you can find here at Rick’s Music Archives also.

Named in honor of a quote from The Simpsons’ Groundskeeper Willie — “If I don’t save the wee turtles, who will?” — the group issued its debut single, “Here Comes Lucky,” on the Blackbean & Placenta label, following compilation contributions to Earworm and Kindercore with the 2000 release of their Pitch-a-Tent full-length debut This Land Is Your Land most of which can be found in the full concert video we present here.
