She-Rock-O-Rama
Here is an evening of female fronted or totally female bands. It was done for MusicTV.com at the Under Acme club and it was a night called “She-Rock-O-Rama” and every band was energy packed and ready to play to a huge and cheering audience.
Catholic Girls band take pop alt rock to new heights. This amazing band rose to cult status in the mid 1980s and made an incredible comeback in 2001 with this amazing set for the She-Rock-O-Rama show at the legendary Acme Underground in New York City. In this March 24, 2001 set the girls closed out the night with a powerful set.
Originally the band was called Double Cross, the Catholic Girls toyed with religious symbols before Madonna made it fashionable and they wore plaid skirts.
The Catholic Girls were really Catholic girls, it wasn’t an act. Nevertheless, the Archdiocese in Rhode Island banned them from performing there because of “God Made You for Me,” a song suggesting that God might be a woman. The Catholic Girls have opened for high-profile artists like Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and the Kinks.
The band’s importance in injecting female angst in rock & roll was finally acknowledged with this performance in the She-Rock-O-Rama sets.. Petersen and Andersen have since revived the Catholic Girls with Jen Bond (drums) and Stephanie Koles (bass), releasing Make Me Believe in 2002.
The Catholic Girls Featuring:
Roxy Andersen (lead guitar, backing vocals)
Gail Petersen (rhythm guitar, lead vocals)
Joanne Holland (bass, guitar)
