Seabeams Featuring Asako (藤本麻子 ) Live At Spiral Lounge, NYC
The Seabeams played several gigs at the Spiral Lounge in New York City. I was broadcasting all the groups from the Spiral Lounge live to the Internet and recorded to digital tape each performance. These recordings were from the CMJ music week in NYC. The SeaBeams were one of my very favorite bands. The feature singer, Asako, (藤本麻子 in Japanese) was a wonderful little woman with an amazing voice and incredible timing. The performance was an incredible mix a sort of a J-pop, trance, sound. I remember them well, and still have their little CD, but the amazing tee shirt has long gone. A shame, one great logo that reflected the Japanese sensibilities of Asako.
The music of the Seabeams was a real mix of pop, trance, a little hip hop all tied together with a stunning mix of electric and aural highs. Asako brought a strong energy with a great smile and her command of the stage. Spiral Lounge was really not used to this kind of music. Soft, lofty, trance inducing, and I think the sound man did not know what to do with it. The electronic music was absolutely some of the best I have had the pleasure of recording. These were some of the first concerts broadcast by OnlineTV.com over the Internet and people around the world watched a postage size moving picture with barely audible sound. But this is just one of the treasures from our archives.
Who are the Seabeams?
The Seabeams were a New York trance Japanese pop band. They played a year or so on the club circuit but Asako returned to Japan to continue her career. Right now only Reed Hays, electronics and theremin player, is still active. But Asako is out there and you can find her at Asako Web.
