Who Is Paul Sampson
Paul Sampson began his musical career in the early 1980’s with the experimental jazz/rock band Bung. Bung metamorphosed into Ens and it was with that group that Paul would hook-up with his long-term collaborator clarinettist Steve Edgson.
Paul, a fine guitarist with Ens and that band changed their name to The Reluctant Stereotypes. Quirky jazz was soon replaced by the Coventry ska sound as the Stereotypes got themselves a new vocalist – a certain Paul King. Paul Sampson wrote the majority of the Stereotypes material, most famously with She Has Changed, Not You and Nightmares. The band soon signed to WEA and even got a shot of fame when they appeared on the Old Grey Whistle Test and toured with The Specials. By 1981, however, Paul and Steve moved on and formed The Pink Umbrellas. That band began as a duo, eventually becoming a fully-fledged band, with Paul taking on the lead vocals. Paul’s love of the psychedelic was much in evidence with tracks like Raspberry Rainbows and Mind of a Child. It was around this time Paul became the house producer at Coventry’s Cabin Studios.
In 1984 the Pink Umbrellas (or The Attic Dressers as they were then known) split and Paul concentrated on production and engineering at Cabin studios (and work on his F.A.T.E. project Twelve Times The Moon).
He has become a successful producer and his credits include work for The Primitives (including a Japanese tour playing bass and producing the hit Crash among many others) and producing Catatonia (he produced the hit Sweet Catatonia). Also, right here at Rick’s Music Archives he has produced and worked with Anna Page
