Who is Pat Kilbride

A virtuoso cittern and guitar player and an excellent singer/songwriter, Pat Kilbride is one of the most dynamic solo performers in Irish music. He was a member of the Battlefield Band for a brief time in the ’70s, then moved to Belgium and eventually Brittany, where he performed in a more pop-oriented group. In the ’90s, Kilbride moved to New York and played music both solo and with the Kips Bay Ceili Band. He was member of “The Pavies”  and after he moved to Europe he released his album Rock & More Roses

Pat Kilbride, the only Irish musician ever to become a member of Scotland’s Battlefield Band, has been internationally celebrated for his expressive singing and scintillating cittern, bouzouki, and guitar playing. Nowhere is that more evident than on a pair of reels played by Pat on guitar and Bothy Band legends piper Paddy Keenan and fiddler Kevin Burke. An album of great songs and tunes, Undocumented Dancing is a dazzling musical document from one of Ireland’s – and now America’s – finest performers.

Pat moved to the US where he lived during the 90’s. During that time he recorded 2 critically acclaimed albums for Green Linnet Records, winning a Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album in 1993, and becoming an established solo performer nationwide. Pat formed Kips Bay (Ceili Band), which made its debut in New York’s home of avant-garde rock, CBGB’s in February 1990. Kips Bay became a permanent fixture on the Irish American Festival circuit. Pat then relocated to London in the later 90’s and quickly immersed himself in the music scene there, recording his solo album, Nightingale Lane. After 2000 he moveed to Spain and Pat is now based in Madrid where he has a home and recording studio.

Where does it all come from

“It’s from American folk music, Blues, that I got my style. Listening to samplers way back when I was sixteen years old, in Ireland. I was one of the rare people that picked up on this. I’m not talking top forty here, I’m talking obscure stuff. My guitar style came from the blues players, the clawhammer, where you have the thumb picking up the accompaniment on the bass strings, and the other three fingers doing the melody on the top strings. People like Mississippi John Hurt and Leadbelly.”
