This 12 Bar Club solo show of Nick Pynn shows many of the skills this artist holds. His mastery of all things strings shows through and the stage is crowded, but not with band mates, with stringed instruments that Nick will soon make sing as they were created to do. From the simple guitar to violin and too many instruments to list he showcases the skills that flow from his being.
At some points his guitar work reaches out to the likes of Eric Roche, Amrit Sond, and Thomas Leeb with his extreme finger picking, hammer-on, and experimental movements.
Shortly after this concert, in 2001, Nick joined the new acoustic version of The Crazy World of Arthur Brown where he contributes most of the instrumentation and arrangements on the 2007 release “The Voice of Love.” I have not seen Arthur Brown since he played with my band in Ibiza 1971 and Arthur is crazy. So many stories to tell there. But this is about Nick Pynn, not the man on fire.
Who is Nick Pynn
Nick Pynn is a British musician and composer noted for his use of bass pedals and live looping with electro-acoustic stringed instruments.Nick has been described as an ‘avant folk’ artist, whose early interests were in world folk and experimental music.
Steve Harley and Pynn played over a hundred dates in 1998 leading up to this 12 Bar concert, performing under the explanatory tour “Stripped to the Bare Bones“. Pynn’s debut solo CD on the Roundhill label In Mirrored Sky (1995) is a collection of autumnal pieces, and features bass player Herbie Flowers and Adrian Oxaal of James on cello.
