Mark D (Duplass from Volcano) Live At 12 Bar Club, London
Who is Mark D (Mark Duplass)
Mark Duplass is an actor and producer, and is considered by some to be one of the founders of the mumblecore aesthetic. He is also the lead singer of the indie rock band Volcano, I’m Still Excited!!
Mark has written and directed the films The Puffy Chair (2005), Baghead (2008), Cyrus (2010), Jeff, Who Lives at Home (2011), and The Do-Deca-Pentathlon (2012). Duplass played the role of Pete Eckhart in the FX television series The League (2009–2015). He was also one of the stars of Safety Not Guaranteed (2012) with Aubrey Plaza.
Duplass co-wrote the horror film Creep (2014) and its 2017 sequel, and starred in both films. He co-wrote and co-produced the television anthology series Room 104 (2017–2020). Duplass has also appeared in Humpday (2009), Greenberg (2010), The Mindy Project (2012–2014), Tammy (2014), The One I Love (2014), The Lazarus Effect (2015), Togetherness (2015–2016), Blue Jay (2016), Tully (2018), Goliath (2018–2019), and Paddleton (2019).
In addition to new episodes of his HBO series Room 104 and some other projects Duplass is newly devoted to revisiting some ideas he once shelved for not being commercially viable and planning costumed theme nights for his family dinners (“lost at sea” and City Slickers were big hits). He’s also gotten into holotropic breathwork, a therapeutic practice where altered breathing rhythms result in a meditative state he likens to “a light mushroom trip.” Though Duplass was skeptical at first, during a recent session accompanied by music, “I woke up and I was singing at the top of my lungs in harmony with this song without knowing what was happening. And then I cried for two hours.” Those two hours helped accomplish what Polyvinyl Records couldn’t in 15 years — convince Duplass to revisit his dormant indie rock project Volcano. Ian Cohen
