John Stewart Solo Show At 12 Bar Club London

When John Stewart took the stage at the legendary 12 Bar Club in London two legends came together. A packed house was able to take part in a real and rich performance by a major force in the music scene. His down to earth performance and constant touch with the audience made this a real night to remember.

He wound through his many songs interactacting with his audience. Keeping them close to his heart he lets them take part in the visions and metaphors expressed in his music and life. Having a video like those here at Ricks Music Archives allows you to be in the audience with him.

It is not just the songs, it is that interpersonal relationship he builds and exposes in his live performance. The stories in between the songs are as important, poignant and make the show more a musical experience.

To tell you how great this performance was, or how important it was in the history of this amazing talent who blessed this world, is an injustice as his abilities and performances are too plentiful and anyone who has seen any of them or heard his songs knows this is something historical.

I am proud to have this in my archives and to share with you all something special. Enjoy.

Who is John Stewart?

an American songwriter and singer. He is best-known as the songwriter of The Monkees‘ No.1 hit song Daydream Believer, and he has also been recognized for his contributions to the American folk music movement of the early and mid 1960s while a member of The Kingston Trio (1961–1967).

Originally the main force of The Kingston Trio, Stewart also released many solo albums the most successful of which was Bombs Away Dream Babies in 1979, produced by Lindsey Buckingham and featuring Stevie Nicks from Fleetwood Mac. The first single, “Gold”, featuring Nicks singing back-up, proved to be his biggest hit reaching No.5 on the US charts.

John Stewart was one of the great singers, songwriter, and performer leading a revolution in music since the 1960’s. His music encompassed the roots and culture of America.

What you see here in this video is the man’s inimitable ability to bring the romance, the myths, the metaphors with the country present, past, and connect with the audience to make a performance you will always remember.

While you may never have heard of John Stewart you have heard his music. From his beginnings in the mid-fifties with his early band “Johnny Stewart & The Furies” to his performances with bands Kingston Trio, The Cumberland Three, and then found his songwriting abilities out paced the bands he worked with.

Soon he wrote for The Monkees, Four Tops, Boyzone, and U2 all doing his “Daydream Believer.” Songs like “Chilly Winds,” “Anna on a Memory,” “All Time Woman,” and “Armstrong” are embedded in the American psyche. His song “Mother Country” was famously played as Apollo 11 space flight made its’ way back to earth and covered by many others.

His bands and releases included artists like James Burton, Jerry Scheff, Larry Carlton, Mike Deasy, Doug Kershaw, Russ Kunkel, Carole King, James Taylor, Danny Kortchmar, Leland Sklar, guitarist Fred Carter, Jr and many others.
