Description
Chicken Of The Woods At 12 Bar Club, London
Chicken of the Woods are a London based band who play great music. Their sound is mix of bluegrass, punk, and some avant-garde interpretations of English folk music, the 1920’s sermons of Rev. F.W. McGee, the rural blues, and the Baptist hymnal, William Blake’s songs of Innocence (Bathtime in the country) and Experience (In the belly of the pig). The titles of the songs give an idea of how very skewed and genuinely poetic the vision of the band is: Paradise Buckler, Emergency of the Horses, Voices In The Air, The Cuckoos, Goldfish Memory…
Chicken of the Woods formed in summer 1999 when Christopher Twigg (vocals, guitar and harmonica) was introduced to Chris Everett (mandolin, vocals and guitars) in London. Both of them had been Art students, painters and neither of them had much time for conceptual Art.
“We reject cleverness and theory, we want to make something embodied which comes from our dreams, memories and imaginings… I wanted to feel the vibrations of my own voice in my own body” Christopher Twigg
They began meeting in Shepherds Bush on Tuesday evenings, playing to start off with Christopher’s songs… songs which had often begun life as poems The Ballad of the Shropshire Lorry, The Cuckoos, songs with rural themes, hallucinatory and symbolic. Collaborative songs followed such as Walk straight no more where the language is sparser, the melodies and arrangements odder.
In Autumn 1999, Chris Everett brought along stand-up bass player John Cheeseman to one of their sessions and they found a cheap studio in West Drayton to record their demo CD Attention.John then became the third member of Chicken of the Woods. In the year 2000, Chicken of the Woods attracted the attention of the London art crowd with gigs in the Kensal Green Cemetery and at the Ladbroke Grove Cobden Club. They became a favorite band at the 12 Bar Club. Their first album CHICKEN OF THE WOODS was released in 2000.
They remind us of The Scaramanga Six and Being 747
